What Are Dental Sealants?

Dental Sealants Escondido, CA

Considering dental sealants? Many individuals opt to have the procedure performed because it produces long-term benefits that cannot be gained from general at-home oral hygiene. On the other hand, some are not familiar with what dental sealants actually are. In this case, it may be helpful to review the following information that details some of the specifics.

A quick guide to dental sealants

Below is a quick overview of dental sealants, including what they are, when they are needed, and how the procedure works.

Definition

Dental sealants are thin liquid coatings that get directly painted onto the chewing surfaces of back teeth. For the most part, they are clear or white in color, making them hard to detect.

The need

Dentists recommend dental sealants for individuals who are at high risk of developing cavities. It is a great preventive measure that can be taken to protect the teeth and prevent cavities from developing on the back molar teeth. Because the molar teeth are responsible for chewing and grinding foods, they are at high risk, thus making dental sealants a great solution.

While there is a common misconception that dental sealants are only for children, many general dentists do recommend them to adult patients. Adults too, struggle with practicing good oral hygiene which puts them at high risk. Additionally, some adults do practice good oral hygiene but genetically suffer, making their mouths especially susceptible to infection

Regardless of age, dental sealants are a great way to keep cavities at a minimum. They also keep the back teeth strong, as constant chewing and grinding can make the bite surface weak over time.

The procedure

A dental sealant procedure is one of the easiest performed by a general dentist. There is no discomfort and the process does not take too long. Outlined below are the steps, which can be helpful to get familiar with.

  • The teeth are cleaned thoroughly to ensure that nothing is left behind that could become sealed
  • Cotton pads are used to dry the teeth. They are also placed throughout the mouth to keep saliva from getting in the way
  • A dental solution is painted over the surface of each of the back teeth. In some cases, the dentist may repeat the application one or two times
  • To finish, the dentist may require that the patient hold the mouth open for a few minutes while drying takes place
  • Afterward, it is advised not to eat or drink anything for at least an hour. This ensures that the chewing surfaces of the molar teeth are properly sealed
